The Portraits
Meet more than three hundred of our wonderfully talented former Yiddish actors, actresses,
composers and playwrights! The Museum of the Yiddish Theatre brings you face to face with
the portraits of a great number of those who once contributed to the existence
and evolution of the
Yiddish stage. Learn about them. Educate yourself. Browse the many photographs,
read about their lives, listen to stories that have been told about them. Visit the
museum's Portrait Gallery for as long and as often as you like. Simply explore!
We, at the Museum of the Yiddish Theatre, realize that in order to honor and
preserve the history of the Yiddish theatre, one needs to conduct one's own research
into its many facets, to immerse oneself in the
stories and personalities of its former stars.
The Yiddish Theatrical Alliance, the mutual aid society for Yiddish actors and
actresses, have provided the Museum with a plethora of photographs from its
large archives, many of which were taken by professional studio photographers,
and we are bringing them to you here for your enjoyment and education. The
Museum also wishes to thank the Museum of the City of New York, which has kindly
allowed the use of many of its images under its Terms of Use.
