YIDDISH THEATRE 101 > THE YIDDISH PLAYS > THE PLAY IN HISTORY  >  THE ROLLAND THEATRE

Congratulations of the
Rolland Theatre to the Public

The management of the New Million Dollar Rolland Theatre, heartily congratulates the Brooklyn Jewry on this worthy occasion of the opening of a new and most beautiful Yiddish Theatre in the world. The mission of the new theatre will not only be to give noble performances, but will also devote all its efforts toward the elevation of the Yiddish play by producing the pearls of the Yiddish dramatic literature.

In spite of the fact that the Yiddish theatre in America is now in a state of great uncertainty, on the verge of a crisis, we undismayed venture to open in the very heart of the Yiddish New York (Brownsville), a New Great Million Dollar Yiddish Theatre.

We promise, that more than one, will be skeptical  as to our success, however, our pure inner and deep confidence will not submit to pessimism. We are certain that Jewish art, like the Jew, is never subject to absolute destruction, the Jews will continue to congregate as heretofore, and as long as circumstances bring them together, Yiddish will not die. And we are also inclined to believe that the Yiddish literature and theatre will be one of the factors in keeping the Jews as a separate entity.

Today is not only our own feast -- but must be a Jewish national celebration, especially of the Brownsville Jewry, who should be proud to have in their environment, the greatest and richest Yiddish theatre in the world; a theatre where the most prominent Yiddish artists will offer their talents for your delight and inspiration.

Today we are submitting to you our next precious drama, which became a reality after endless strife, energy and labor, and we assure you, our respected audience, that the only artistry that beautifies the theatre will be unseen against the artistic grace and achievements of the productions on the stage.

The doors of the Rolland Theatre are opened today to the public, without whose influence and assistance all efforts must be in vain.

We are therefore offering you the crown of our endeavors, and do brotherly ask of you to help us ascend to the altitudes of our aspirations, by which you will profit spiritually in seeing the best plays, plays that teach and amuse; and hear sweet Yiddish folk music that speaks to the Jewish heart.

A theatre is a public institution -- the Rolland Theatre is yours to patronize, ours to give the best and the greatest.

Wishing you a Happy New Year, we beg to remain yours for ever, most respectfully,

THE ROLLAND THEATRE

William Rolland, General Manager.

Michal Michalesko, Director.
