Allow me to use Eddie
Relkin's term of greeting. You know that this season
Relkin has made me Picon'scious. Of course I got a
rise out of "Oy is dus etc.," but the biggest thrill
I received several weeks ago while visiting your
theatre was when E.A.R. [Relkin] asked me, nay,
rather pushed me up to the mezzanine to see what he
termed -- "the greatest thing IN THE WORLD." You
know what it was? A collection of your theatrical
posters in many languages from various parts of the
world, and in one corner I noticed the very first
full-page newspaper ad, a drawing that I had made
for your very first New York appearance as
"Yankele." Was I thrilled?
That's why I said
"Certainly!," when Dora Weissman, the irresistible,
asked me to add my meager talents to help decorate
this book in your honor, although it is printed by
Mr. Harry Donenfeld, a bigger philanthropist than I
am. You see, I have good company in the great Harry
Hershfield who did such a splendid job on the cover.
I merely did the montage that Dora termed "From
Broome Street to the North Pole," and the other cuts
of you and your family.
I hope you like them,
and that I'll have the opportunity to do much more
for you graphically in the many, many years that you
will carry on to brighten our lives with your
sparkling personality. |
