A RADIO HOUR
ABOUT YIDDISH THEATRE
The Hour is Arranged by the Actors' Union
October 20, 1939
The Yiddish [Hebrew] Actors' Union will soon begin a
radio hour about the Yiddish theatre. The programs will
appear on the station "WEVD."
In the programs members of the Yiddish Actors' Union
will participate and perform in a great concert. In
every hour a prominent actor or social doer will perform, and he will speak
about the condition of the Yiddish theatre, and the role
that it plays in the Jewish life of America.
The details about the time
when the theatre hour will take place, and what program
it wants to arrange, will be explained in a later
announcement. According to Mr. Guskin, the manager of
the Yiddish Actors' Union, he assures us that the theatre
radio hour will be conducted in such a magnificent way
that it will be listened to in every Jewish house.
THE VOICE OF
YIDDISH THEATRE ON THE RADIO
An Explanation by Reuben Guskin About the Radio Hour of
the Yiddish Actors' Union
November 3, 1939
The Yiddish Actors' Union has made
a decision to present a radio program for an entire
hour's time, which might represent all the Yiddish
theatres that exist in New York, as well as all the
members of the Union in general.
On Saturday 11 November at twelve
o'clock in the afternoon there will be given on the
popular radio station WEVD, the first program of the
Yiddish theatre profession that will be continued every
Saturday at the same time under the name, "Di Shtime Fun
Idishn Teater (The Voice of Yiddish Theatre)."
Until now each theatre gave special
radio programs from time to time on various stations,
and only with very limited powers. The Yiddish Actors'
Union, which controls the entire profession, believes
rightly that the program, which it will introduce and
develop, will attract a large number of listeners. On
the program there will be heard the best actors,
singers, musicians, and the best things from the old and
new repertoire. Special features will be written by the
best playwrights and composers. Also they will give
precise information about the activity in each theatre.
From time to time, well-known community and cultural
figures will appear on our program and will talk about
Yiddish theatre in America and Europe.
You will hear all your favorite
stars, both those who play now in the New York theatres,
as well as those who are temporarily out of work for
various reasons. The program is for the public, and for
that we will give the public a very prominent place in
our program through a special feature: "Der oylem fregt
(The Public Asks)." Every listener, through a letter, will
be able to ask us about everything that interests him in
and around the Yiddish theatre; and you can not only ask, but also
you can express your opinion about plays,
performances, plays by this or that actor, praise or
criticize. The best letter will be read on our program, and
as far as possible it will be answered.
We still have a lot to say about
our plans for our radio hour, but actions speak louder
than words. Therefore we will end with the hope that you
will take our invitation and will turn on your radio on
Saturday, 11 November at twelve noon on station WEVD, as
well as all the following Saturdays at the same time, to
hear "The Voice of the Yiddish Theatre." We hope that it
will be one of the most popular and beautiful radio
programs.
THEATRE RADIO HOUR
BEGINS NEXT SATURDAY
November 10, 1939
The radio hour, which the Actors' Union has decided to
arrange in order to discuss issues related to Yiddish theatre,
will begin overnight Saturday, on 18 November at noon.
The hour will be known under the name, "The Voice of
Yiddish Theatre."
As was already announced, the radio
hour will be about Yiddish theatre performed by
prominent journalists and leaders who will express
their opinion about the various questions that have a
relationship to Yiddish theatre. The first performance

the managing editor of the "Forward." He will explain
his view on the Yiddish theatre, both about the plays
that will be played, as well as the productions.
On every hour there will be
performed a large concert in which there will
participate the most prominent actors from the Yiddish
stage. They will perform especially in singing numbers
and declamations, and they will also play in
groups
various scenes from the plays that are being staged in
the Yiddish theatres.
The Yiddish Actors' Union has many
plans for this radio hour, to make it the most important
Yiddish hour on the radio. The plans will be announced
from time to time.
The theatre hour should have begun this

to be put off until Saturday night.
