YIDDISH STAGE PAYS HONOR TO J.R. SCHIFF
Dinner Given to Theatre Patron Under Auspices of the Hebrew
Actors Union.
Actors,
managers, musicians, chorines, prompters -- all the elements
of the Yiddish theatre world foregathered to honor Jacob R.
Schiff, lawyer and theatre patron, at a dinner held last
night at the Central Plaza, 111 Second Avenue, under the
auspices of the Hebrew Actors Union and affiliated
organizations.
Neither
producer nor "angel" in the usual sense, Mr. Schiff occupies
a unique position as patron of the Yiddish stage, with which
he has been associated for many years. In the last
half-dozen years he has helped most of the Yiddish
playhouses of the city, at one time or another, to get under
way at the season's start, before the box-offices could
gather momentum to carry on. He is known also for his
generous aid to individuals.
William
Rolland of the Public Theatre was chairman of the
arrangements committee, and B.C. Vladeck, manger of The
Forward, toastmaster. The speakers included Reuben Guskin,
manager of the Hebrew Actors Union; Adolf Held, president of
the Amalgamated Bank; Abe Sincoff, president of the Yiddish
Theatrical Alliance, and Joseph Rumshinsky, composer. There
were 250 persons present. |
